How it works
How a quote works for any address
One request
Quotes from suppliers who cover your area
Shipping-Containers.co.nz is an independent quote marketplace. We do not own containers, yards or trucks. You tell us what you need, and the request goes to container suppliers and transport operators who service your address. They quote you directly, and any contract is between you and the supplier.
Include the size, new or used, buy or hire, and the full delivery address. Add the access details that change the price: gate width, slope, soft ground, trees and overhead power lines. Photos help. Use the quote form for any town, including places without their own page below.
Delivery price
What changes the delivered price
No New Zealand supplier or transport operator we checked publishes a per-kilometre rate; delivery is quoted per address. The main factors are the distance from the supplier’s yard, the truck needed and the access at your site. One Auckland seller’s published 2024 examples for a 20ft ran from $300 within Auckland to $1,100 to Kerikeri (GST not stated).
A HIAB crane truck can lift over fences onto tight sites, while a swinglift needs a long, level strip beside the truck. Our guides to HIAB vs swinglift delivery and container transport costs explain both.

Seaports
Two ports handle two thirds of the trade
In the year to June 2025, Tauranga and Auckland together handled about 66% of New Zealand’s container volume, excluding transhipment (Ministry of Transport FIGS data). Lyttelton is the largest South Island port, followed by Port Otago. Taranaki left the regular container trade in 2017 (Port Strategy), and Gisborne and Queenstown have no container port, so containers there come in by road.
Rail-linked inland ports spread supply further. The Port of Tauranga network includes MetroPort Auckland, Ruakura in Hamilton and MetroPort Christchurch at Rolleston, and Lyttelton runs CityDepot and MidlandPort for empty containers. Manawatū has its inland port at Longburn.
Ferries and islands
Crossing Cook Strait and getting to the islands
Between the North and South Islands, a container usually travels on a truck or trailer booked as freight on the Interislander or Bluebridge, or by rail or coastal shipping, so it is quoted per job. Buying from stock on your own island normally avoids that cost.
For Waiheke and Great Barrier, SeaLink carries containers by barge. The Bluff to Stewart Island ferry does not carry vehicles (RealNZ), so heavy freight needs a separate operator, and the Chatham Islands are served by a cargo service from Napier.

Regional differences
What changes from one region to the next
Coastal salt
Sites within 500 m of the coast or harbour, and all offshore islands, are exposure Zone D. Paint wears faster, so our coastal corrosion guide matters in most cities.
Geothermal air
BRANZ measured mild steel corrosion in Rotorua at about five times a severe marine site. Paint condition decides how long a container lasts there.
Frost and condensation
Queenstown averages about 117 ground frost days a year and Christchurch about 85, against about 4 in Auckland. Cold nights mean more condensation inside the box.
Wind
Wellington and New Plymouth have the highest average wind speeds of the main centres. Empty or raised containers on exposed sites should be tied down.
Council guidance
Only a few councils, such as Whangārei and Invercargill, publish container guidance. Elsewhere, read our building consent guide and the district plan.

Shipping containers near you: common questions
Container suppliers operate yards in all the main centres and in many regional towns. Send your address through our quote form, and the request goes to suppliers and transport operators who service that area. They quote you directly with the container and delivery priced. Our delivery guide explains what to prepare.
No. Shipping-Containers.co.nz does not own containers, depots or trucks. We are a quote marketplace that passes your request to independent suppliers and transport operators who cover your address. You deal with the supplier directly, and the contract is between you and them.
Delivery is quoted per address. It depends on how far the container is from your site, the truck needed and the access. Published examples from one Auckland seller in 2024 ranged from $300 within Auckland to $1,100 to Kerikeri for a 20ft, with GST not stated. Rural, island and inter-island jobs cost more.
Yes, but it adds a Cook Strait crossing, usually as freight on the Interislander or Bluebridge, or by rail or coastal shipping. It is normally cheaper to buy from stock on your own island. Ask suppliers for a delivered price so the crossing is included.
Yes. The location pages cover the main regions, but requests from any New Zealand address are passed to suppliers who service it. Give the full address and describe the access, especially for rural properties, islands and steep sites, so the supplier can plan the right truck.
It depends on the supplier’s stock near you, the truck’s schedule and your site access. Ask for the delivery date in the quote, and allow extra time for island, rural and special containers. Prices and grades are summarised in our NZ price index.
