How containers reach the top of the south
Port
Port Nelson and the road network
Port Nelson is owned through Infrastructure Holdings Ltd, a 50/50 company of Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council. Its main exports are forestry products, seafood, pipfruit and wine, and about 67% of its volume is export cargo. In the year to 30 June 2025 it handled 47,596 TEU. In 2023 MSC, Maersk (weekly), Pacifica and ANL were calling, and container capacity was set to rise by about a third on 2022.
Nelson has no rail line, so containers arrive by ship or by road. Units for Nelson, Richmond and Motueka can often be sourced from boxes moving through the port, while some Marlborough deliveries may come from further afield. Freight distance is one reason prices are quoted per address, so always ask for a delivered price.
Local conditions
Salt air and unstable hillsides
The coastal strip from Tāhunanui to the port lies inside NZS 3604 exposure zone D, which covers land within 500 m of the coast. Salt shortens paint life on steel, so check the roof and door seals on any used container and plan touch-ups. Our coastal corrosion guide explains the maintenance.
Ground stability matters too. The storm that began on 16 August 2022 brought five days of rain, more than 400 landslips and about 1,200 evacuations, including what was described as New Zealand’s largest urban landslip, and led to council buyouts on Brook Street. On hillside sections, place containers on firm, level ground away from cut banks, and read our container foundations guide before setting one on piers or a slab. Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough are in H1 climate zone 3 for insulation.
Local uses
How Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough use containers
Apple and kiwifruit orchards
Nelson and Tasman grow about 28% of New Zealand’s apples, and kiwifruit is grown in the region too. Orchards use 20ft and 40ft containers for picking gear, tools and spare parts between seasons. Our farm and orchard storage page covers layouts and shelters.
Marlborough vineyards
Vineyards around Blenheim keep irrigation parts, tools and spray equipment in containers at the block. Agrichemicals must be stored under the hazardous substances rules, which a standard dry container does not meet on its own. For larger quantities, ask about bunded dangerous goods containers.
Seafood and cool storage
Seafood is one of Port Nelson’s main exports, and growers and processors use refrigerated containers for peak-season overflow. An operating reefer needs a suitable power supply, often three-phase for a 40ft unit, installed by an electrician with an Electrical Safety Certificate.
Repairs and renovations
Homeowners repairing a house after storm damage, or renovating, often hire a container to keep furniture dry on site while the work is done. Ask about the minimum hire term, which varies by supplier, and plan where the truck can set the container down.
Rules and delivery
Councils and delivery areas
Councils
Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough rules
Nelson City Council is a unitary authority and runs the Nelson Resource Management Plan. Richmond, Motueka, Māpua and Golden Bay fall under Tasman District Council, and Blenheim and Picton under Marlborough District Council, each with its own plan rules on setbacks, height and site coverage. We found no container-specific guidance from Nelson City Council, so national rules apply: a container placed on the ground for storage involves no building work, while foundations, services, a roof, a fit-out or an occupied use need building consent. Our consent guide explains the exemptions.
Rural zones usually have larger setbacks from roads and boundaries than residential sections. Check the zone before choosing where the truck sets the container down, because moving it later means paying for another delivery.
Delivery areas
Richmond, Motueka, Golden Bay and Blenheim
Suppliers who service Nelson deliver to Stoke, Tāhunanui, Richmond, Māpua and Motueka, and over to Blenheim and the Wairau Valley. Golden Bay deliveries cross Tākaka Hill, and State Highway 6 to Blenheim is long and winding, so expect a higher transport cost for those addresses. Orchard and vineyard rows are often too narrow for a swinglift, and a HIAB or tilt tray may suit better. Our HIAB vs swinglift guide covers the space each truck needs.
For purchase or container hire in Nelson, give the supplier the exact address, the ground conditions and any overhead power lines. Without them a quote cannot include delivery accurately. You can send all of it through our quote form, and the locations page lists the other regions we cover.

Shipping containers in Nelson: common questions
Shipping containers for sale in Nelson come from suppliers and yards that deliver across Nelson, Richmond, Motueka, Golden Bay and Blenheim in Marlborough. Shipping-Containers.co.nz does not run its own depot here. We pass your request to suppliers and transport operators who service your address, and they quote you directly with the container price and delivery. A 20ft container for sale in Nelson is the most common request, followed by 40ft and high cube units. Send your size and address to compare quotes.
Not for plain storage. Placing a container on the ground or on sleepers is not building work, so building consent is generally not needed. Foundations with fixings, services, a roof, a fit-out or use as a sleepout, office or workshop need consent. The Nelson Resource Management Plan, or the Tasman or Marlborough plan outside the city, still sets setbacks and site coverage, so check your zone before delivery.
There were too few Nelson listings for a local median in the Shipping-Containers.co.nz NZ price index, October 2026. Nationally, a new 20ft had a median of $4,830 incl. GST and a used wind and watertight 20ft $3,680 incl. GST. Delivery is extra, and Golden Bay and Marlborough addresses cost more to reach. Our container price guide explains what affects the total.
Yes. Container hire in Nelson suits renovations, house moves and seasonal orchard storage. Published NZ hire rates for a 20ft unit run from $90 to $276 per month (GST excluded or not stated), with delivery and collection charged separately. Minimum terms vary by supplier, from two months to a year in the rates we found, so check the term before you agree.
Yes. Suppliers who service the top of the south deliver to Blenheim, the Wairau Valley and vineyard blocks. Tell the supplier the row width, the ground surface and whether the container must go between rows or at the block entrance. Soft ground after rain can stop a loaded truck, so a firm, gravelled spot near the access track makes delivery quicker and cheaper.
Yes, near the coast. Storage containers in Nelson within 500 m of the sea, including Tāhunanui and the port area, sit in NZS 3604 exposure zone D, where paint breaks down faster. Inspect the roof and door seals once a year, wash salt off sheltered areas, touch up scratches with a marine-grade paint and keep the roof free of standing water.
A standard dry container is not automatically a compliant hazardous substances store. Incompatible substances must be kept apart, and larger quantities may need a dedicated store with ventilation, secondary containment and signage, plus a location compliance certificate above threshold quantities. Use WorkSafe’s hazardous substances calculator to check your quantities, then ask suppliers for a purpose-built dangerous goods container if you need one.
