Supply and delivery
Buying a container in a region without a container port
Port Taranaki
Why most containers arrive by land
Port Taranaki announced in November 2017 that it was leaving the container trade, and its last containership call was in 2014 (Port Strategy report). The port still handles bulk and project cargo and can take ad hoc containers, and it runs a reach stacker request service (Port Taranaki).
For buyers, this means containers for sale in Taranaki are usually brought in by road or rail from other ports or inland depots, then held in local yards. Ask the supplier where the unit is now. A container already in New Plymouth costs less to deliver than one still in the Manawatū or Hawke’s Bay, and our guide to transport costs explains the factors.
Delivery areas
Around the mountain
Requests go to suppliers covering New Plymouth, Bell Block, Ōakura, Waitara, Motunui, Inglewood, Stratford, Eltham and Hāwera. For Whanganui and the Manawatū, see our Palmerston North page.
Dairy farm deliveries often go across paddocks or down tanker tracks. Firm ground and a clear turning area keep the job simple. Check gate widths and overhead lines, and read our guide to delivery and site preparation.
Local uses
What Taranaki buyers use containers for
Dairy farms
Taranaki has 14% of New Zealand’s dairy herds and 9.5% of the cows. Containers serve as feed stores, workshops and calf sheds; see our farm storage page.
Energy and engineering
Engineering and energy firms use containers for tools, parts and site stores. The region is in transition: Methanex plans to end methanol production at Motunui in February 2027.
Chemical stores
Farms and contractors storing fuel or agrichemicals need more than a dry box. See our dangerous goods containers page.
Home and beach storage
Households hire storage containers in New Plymouth for renovations and moves, and coastal owners use them as boat and surf gear stores.
| Factor | Taranaki detail | What it means for a container |
|---|---|---|

| Coastal salt | West coast surf beaches are exposure Zone D to E | Faster paint wear; wash, touch up, use stainless fixings |
| Insulation zone | New Plymouth, Stratford and South Taranaki are H1 climate zone 2 | Applies if you fit a container out for people |
Council rules and buying in New Plymouth
New Plymouth District Council
Part Operative District Plan and road permits
The New Plymouth District Plan has been the Part Operative District Plan since 29 August 2025 (NPDC public notice). We found no container-specific rule, so zone yards, height and coverage apply. Stratford and South Taranaki have their own plans.
If the container has to sit on the road during a renovation, NPDC has a permit process for skip bins and other temporary obstructions. A plain container on sleepers is generally not building work; see our building consent guide.

Shipping containers in New Plymouth: common questions
Shipping containers for sale in New Plymouth come from suppliers and yards that deliver across New Plymouth, Inglewood, Stratford and Hāwera. Shipping-Containers.co.nz does not run its own depot here. We pass your request to suppliers and transport operators who service your address, and they quote you directly with the container price and delivery. A 20ft container for sale in New Plymouth is the most common request, followed by 40ft and high cube units. Send your size and address to compare quotes.
Port Taranaki left the regular container trade, with its last containership call in 2014. It can still handle ad hoc containers and project cargo. Containers sold in Taranaki are generally brought in by road or rail and held in local yards, so ask where the unit is before comparing delivery prices.
A loaded container on the ground is very stable. New Plymouth is one of the windiest centres in the country, so empty units on exposed coastal or ridge sites, raised units and anything on piles should be tied down. Habitable containers need engineered hold-downs.
Not usually for plain storage. A container placed on the ground without foundations is generally not building work. A slab with hold-down fixings, a roof between containers, power or a workshop fit-out can need building consent, and rural setbacks in the district plan still apply.
West coast sites near surf beaches are in exposure Zone D or E. Choose a unit with sound paint, keep the roof free of ponding water, rinse salt off sheltered surfaces and touch up scratches early. Use stainless steel fixings for anything you attach.
Yes. Hire suits renovations, moves and short projects. Published 20ft hire rates across New Zealand ranged from $90 to $276 a month in October 2026 (GST excluded or not stated), plus delivery and pick-up. Other regions are listed on our delivery areas page.
