Getting a container onto a Wellington site
CentrePort
Thorndon terminal and Hutt Valley yards
CentrePort’s container terminal is at Thorndon. It handled 60,396 TEU in the year to June 2025, about 3% of the national total (Ministry of Transport port figures). The 2016 Kaikōura earthquake caused liquefaction at the terminal and put two gantry cranes out of action for 10 months; after repairs finished in 2022 the container wharf grew from 125 m to 262 m of working length (CentrePort history).
Container yards that serve the region sit in the Hutt Valley as well as near the port. Requests are passed to suppliers covering Wellington city, Lower Hutt, Seaview, Upper Hutt, Porirua, Kāpiti, Ōtaki and Masterton. For Manawatū and Horowhenua see our Palmerston North page.
Access
Hill suburbs, narrow streets and the right truck
Hill suburbs often mean sloping sections and narrow streets, and a swinglift needs a long, level strip beside the truck. A HIAB crane truck can often lift a 10ft or 20ft over a bank or fence instead, as long as there is firm ground for its outriggers and no overhead lines in the way. Our comparison of HIAB and swinglift trucks helps you describe the site.
If the container has to sit on the road, you need a permit. Porirua City Council charges $60 for up to 14 days and requires a traffic management plan and Corridor Access Request for containers over 20ft. Hutt City Council needs 2 working days’ notice and a 15 m gap from corners and crossings.
Local conditions
Wind, salt and shaky ground
New Zealand’s windiest city
Wellington averages about 22 km/h of wind, with more than 20 days a year over 63 km/h (WeatherWatch). An empty container on an exposed ridge should be tied down.
South coast salt
The metal roofing code of practice treats the North Island’s south coast as a particularly harsh marine environment. Expect faster paint wear in Island Bay, Lyall Bay and on Cook Strait faces.
Check your wind zone
Greater Wellington publishes a wind zone hazard layer, and a LIM may show your site’s NZS 3604 wind zone. Above Extra High, a structure needs specific engineering design.
Reclaimed land
Liquefaction at the port in 2016 showed how reclaimed ground behaves. Raised or habitable containers on piles need an engineer’s foundation design.
| Council | Notice | Key conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Porirua City | 5 working days | $60 permit, 14 days maximum, reflective markings; over 20ft needs a traffic management plan and Corridor Access Request |
| Hutt City | 2 working days | Keep footpath clear, 15 m from corners and crossings, reflective marker; $10 a day if a metered park is covered |
| Wellington City | 2 working days (skips) | Skip permit rules: 14 days maximum, wholly on the road, 4 m clear road; ask the council about containers |
Council rules and buying in Wellington
Wellington City Council
The 2024 District Plan
Wellington City’s 2024 District Plan now has operative intensification rules, and rules decided in March 2024 took effect on 14 July 2025. We found no container-specific rule, so zone yards, height and coverage apply. Hutt City, Upper Hutt, Porirua and Kāpiti each have their own plans.
A plain container placed for storage is generally not building work. Cut openings, a roof, power or a sleepout fit-out bring in building consent; see our building consent guide.
Prices and hire
Container hire Wellington buyers compare with buying
The Shipping-Containers.co.nz NZ price index, October 2026, puts the national median for a new 20ft at $4,830 incl. GST and a used wind and watertight 20ft at $3,680 incl. GST, before delivery. Near the south coast, sound paint is worth paying for; our coastal corrosion guide explains why. Storage containers in Wellington for renovations are often hired; see shipping container hire and request prices through the quote form.

Shipping containers in Wellington: common questions
Shipping containers for sale in Wellington come from suppliers and yards that deliver across Wellington city, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast. Shipping-Containers.co.nz does not run its own depot here. We pass your request to suppliers and transport operators who service your address, and they quote you directly with the container price and delivery. A 20ft container for sale in Wellington is the most common request, followed by 40ft and high cube units. Send your size and address to compare quotes.
Often, with the right truck. A HIAB crane truck can lift a container over a bank or fence if it can park close enough on firm ground with no power lines overhead. A swinglift needs a long level area. Send photos of the street and section with your request so the supplier can plan the lift.
A loaded container sitting on the ground is very stable. Empty units on exposed ridges, raised units and anything on piles should be tied down, and habitable containers need engineered hold-downs. Your NZS 3604 wind zone, shown on a LIM or the Greater Wellington hazard map, tells you how exposed the site is.
Yes. Porirua City Council requires a permit, charges $60, allows up to 14 days and needs a traffic management plan and Corridor Access Request for containers over 20ft. Hutt City Council requires 2 working days’ notice and keeps containers 15 m from corners and crossings.
Buy a unit with sound paint, keep the roof free of ponding water, wash salt off sheltered surfaces and touch up scratches early. Use stainless steel fixings for anything attached. Our condensation guide covers the inside, which matters just as much.
Yes. Requests are passed to suppliers who cover Porirua, Kāpiti, Ōtaki and Masterton as well as the city and the Hutt. Longer runs and rural access add to the delivery price. For other regions see our delivery areas page.
