Geothermal corrosion

Why steel wears faster in Rotorua

BRANZ field trials

Five times the corrosion of a severe marine site

BRANZ exposed metal samples around Rotorua and compared them with a severe marine site at Oteranga Bay on Wellington’s south coast (BRANZ study report SR393). In the first year, mild steel near the wastewater plant at Sulphur Bay lost about 3,302 g/m², about five times the marine site’s 650 g/m². Zinc, the coating on galvanised fittings, corroded at 84.2 g/m² against 33.1 at the coast. Early rust did not protect the metal, and attack sped up sharply once hydrogen sulphide passed about 1 part per billion; measured levels reached 31 to 41 ppb.

The metal roofing code of practice treats sites within 50 m of a fumarole, and much of Rotorua generally, as a geothermal microclimate.

What to do

Choosing and caring for a container here

A container’s corrugated steel relies on its paint. In geothermal air, paint condition and how you look after it matter more than the grade label. Pick a one-trip or late-model unit with intact paint, and inspect a second-hand box closely at the door seals, roof dents and corner castings. Touch up scratches straight away, keep the roof free of ponding water and wash it down regularly. Use stainless fixings for anything you attach.

Our guide to rust and corrosion covers coatings, and our buying checklist lists what to inspect.

Local uses

What plateau buyers use containers for

Forestry and wood processing

Forestry and wood processing contributed just over $328m to Rotorua district GDP in 2023. Contractors use containers as site stores and workshops on skid sites and at mills.

Farms

Farms around Reporoa and the plateau use containers for feed, tools and parts; see our farm storage page.

Tourism and events

Operators use containers for equipment and pop-up kiosks. Our event and hospitality page covers fit-outs.

Home storage

Households hire storage containers in Rotorua and Taupō for renovations and moves, usually a 10ft or 20ft on the driveway.

Supply, council rules and prices

Supply and delivery

From the Port of Tauranga to the plateau

The nearest container port is Tauranga, whose Sulphur Point terminal is linked inland by the East Coast Main Trunk rail line (Port of Tauranga). The last leg to Rotorua is by road. Requests are passed to suppliers covering Rotorua city, Ngongotahā, Kawerau, Murupara, Reporoa, Tokoroa and Taupō. For the coast see our Tauranga page, and for the Waikato our Hamilton page.

The Rotorua District Plan, operative since 2016, sets the zone rules; Taupō has its own plan. A plain container on sleepers is generally not building work.

Delivery is quoted per address, so the more detail you give about access, the more accurate the quote.

Prices and hire

Container hire Rotorua and buying prices

The Shipping-Containers.co.nz NZ price index, October 2026, puts the national median for a new 20ft at $4,830 incl. GST and a used wind and watertight 20ft at $3,680 incl. GST, before delivery. In Rotorua, the difference in paint condition between those two can matter more than anywhere else in the country. Compare buying with hire through the quote form.

FAQ

Shipping containers in Rotorua: common questions

01

Shipping containers for sale in Rotorua come from suppliers and yards that deliver across Rotorua, Taupō, Tūrangi and Tokoroa. Shipping-Containers.co.nz does not run its own depot here. We pass your request to suppliers and transport operators who service your address, and they quote you directly with the container price and delivery. A 20ft container for sale in Rotorua is the most common request, followed by 40ft and high cube units. Send your size and address to compare quotes.

02

Yes, in geothermal areas. BRANZ field trials in Rotorua measured first-year mild steel corrosion of about 3,302 g/m² near Sulphur Bay, roughly five times a severe marine site on Wellington’s south coast. Hydrogen sulphide in the air speeds up the attack, and early rust does not protect the steel.

03

Paint condition matters most. A one-trip container with an intact factory coating gives you the longest start. A used unit can work if the paint is sound and you maintain it, but check door seals, roof dents and corners closely. Our new vs used guide compares the trade-offs.

04

Yes. Requests for Taupō and the surrounding area are passed to suppliers who service it, and there are container suppliers and crane operators based in Taupō and Tokoroa. Give the full address and describe the access so the supplier can send the right truck.

05

Not usually for plain storage. A container placed on the ground without foundations is generally not building work. Foundations, cut openings, power or use as a room bring in building consent, and the Rotorua District Plan sets yards and coverage. Ask the council about your property before building around a container.

06

Rotorua averages about 57 ground frosts a year, and Taupō is in the same cold H1 zone. Cold steel collects condensation on clear nights. Fit extra vents, use moisture absorbers and keep goods on pallets. Other regions are listed on our delivery areas page.
