Where North Island containers come from
The Port of Tauranga is the country’s largest container port and handled about 40 percent of New Zealand’s container volume in the year to June 2025, with Ports of Auckland at about 26 percent. Both feed inland hubs: MetroPort in South Auckland and the Ruakura inland port in Hamilton. Northport serves Northland, Napier Port serves Hawke’s Bay, Port Taranaki serves New Plymouth and CentrePort serves Wellington. Used containers are released from these ports and depots as shipping lines retire them, which is why prices for second-hand units tend to be most competitive near the big port cities.
Delivery to most North Island sections is by HIAB truck or swinglift. Rural sites in Northland, the central plateau and Tairāwhiti often add travel time, so a delivery address gives a more accurate quote than a town name. Read how container delivery works before you prepare the site.
Conditions to plan for
Much of the coastline is exposed to salt spray, and sites within about 500 m of the coast fall in the most corrosive exposure zone, so paint condition matters more there. Rotorua’s geothermal air corrodes steel faster than a typical coastal site. Wellington adds high wind, steep sections and narrow streets. Our guide to rust and coastal corrosion explains what to check.

North Island questions
Often, yes. Used containers are released at port depots, so the purchase price and especially the delivery cost tend to be lower for sites close to Auckland, Tauranga or the inland hubs at MetroPort and Ruakura. The further the site is from a depot, the more travel time the transport operator has to charge. Our transport cost guide explains how distance and truck type affect the price.
Yes. The city pages describe local conditions, but requests work for any North Island address, including islands in the Hauraki Gulf. Enter the town or suburb and the delivery address in the quote form, and suppliers who service that area can price supply and delivery. For remote or island sites, mention access details so the transport quote is accurate from the start.
