Buying next to New Zealand’s biggest port

Port of Tauranga

Sulphur Point and the national rail network

The Port of Tauranga is New Zealand’s largest port by cargo and container volume. Excluding transhipment it handled 888,238 TEU in the year to June 2025, about 40% of the national total (Ministry of Transport port figures), and the Bay of Plenty ships about 48% of New Zealand’s containerised exports (ANZ regional report). The container terminal is at Sulphur Point, with a 770 m wharf and nine cranes, and rail runs inland through the Kaimai tunnel (port overview).

So many containers move through the city that supply is rarely the issue. The quote mostly comes down to grade, the truck needed and access at your address.

Delivery areas

From Katikati to Te Puke

Requests go to suppliers and transport operators covering Tauranga city, Mount Maunganui, Pāpāmoa, Bethlehem, Welcome Bay and Ōmokoroa, and further out Te Puke, Katikati and Waihi. Inland, our Rotorua and Taupō page covers the plateau, and our Hamilton page the Waikato.

Orchard deliveries often go down narrow races between shelter belts. Measure gate widths and check overhead clearance, then read our guide to delivery and site access. One Auckland seller published a 2024 delivery example of $950 to Tauranga for a 20ft (GST not stated), which shows why buying from stock already in the Bay usually makes sense.

Local uses

What Bay of Plenty buyers use containers for

Kiwifruit orchards

The Bay of Plenty grows about 80% of New Zealand’s kiwifruit, with the biggest concentration around Te Puke. Orchardists use containers for picking gear and tools, and see our farm storage page for layouts.

Cool storage

Packhouses and growers add refrigerated containers for peak harvest weeks. A 40ft reefer usually needs a three-phase supply installed by an electrician.

Business storage

Industrial vacancy is about 3.6% in Tauranga and 3% in Mount Maunganui, so firms short of space put storage containers on their own sites.

Growing suburbs

Tauranga grew from 80,100 people in 1996 to 161,000 in 2025. Builders and families moving house hire containers for site and household storage.

Council rules and buying in Tauranga

Councils

Tauranga City Plan and Western Bay rules

Tauranga City Council’s planning rules are in the Tauranga City Plan. We found no city rule written only for shipping containers, so a container is assessed against the zone’s yards, height and coverage rules. Te Puke, Katikati and Ōmokoroa are in the Western Bay of Plenty District, whose granny flat rules allow units up to 70 m² that are 2 m from all boundaries in residential zones and 10 m front and 5 m side and rear in rural zones.

Storage on sleepers is generally not building work. Piles need care on soft ground; MBIE Determination 2024/007 examined timber piles in poor fill in Tauranga. See our building consent guide.

Container hire Tauranga and coastal buying tips

The Shipping-Containers.co.nz NZ price index, October 2026, puts the national median for a new 20ft at $4,830 incl. GST and a used wind and watertight 20ft at $3,680 incl. GST, before delivery. Near the coast, a one-trip unit with intact paint lasts longer than a cheap as-is box. Our coastal corrosion guide explains why. For short jobs, container hire in Tauranga can be arranged through the same quote form.

FAQ

Shipping containers in Tauranga: common questions

01

Shipping containers for sale in Tauranga come from suppliers and yards that deliver across Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Pāpāmoa, Te Puke and the western Bay of Plenty. Shipping-Containers.co.nz does not run its own depot here. We pass your request to suppliers and transport operators who service your address, and they quote you directly with the container price and delivery. A 20ft container for sale in Tauranga is the most common request, followed by 40ft and high cube units. Send your size and address to compare quotes.

02

Not automatically. Purchase prices depend on grade and age, and our October 2026 index found North and South Island medians for a new 20ft within about $40 of each other. What you can save is transport: a container already in the Bay costs less to deliver than one trucked from Auckland, where one seller’s published example was $950 to Tauranga in 2024.

03

Sites within 500 m of the coast are in exposure Zone D, so salt builds up on sheltered surfaces. Choose a unit with sound paint, keep the roof free of ponding water, wash it down regularly and touch up scratches early. Use stainless steel fixings for anything you attach.

04

Usually, for storage. A plain container on sleepers is generally not building work. Western Bay rural zones have larger setbacks than town sections, and a roof, slab or fit-out can need building consent. Check the district plan and ask the council about your property before you build anything around it.

05

Yes, some suppliers hire reefers for harvest peaks. You need a suitable power supply, often three-phase for a 40ft, installed by an electrician. Storing produce for others or for export supply chains can bring in MPI food safety requirements, so check before you start.

06

Requests are passed to suppliers covering Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Pāpāmoa, Bethlehem, Welcome Bay, Ōmokoroa, Te Puke, Katikati and Waihi. For rural addresses, describe the access in your request so the supplier sends the right truck. Other regions are listed on our delivery areas page.
