New and One-Trip Shipping Containers for Sale in NZ

A new container in New Zealand is almost always a one-trip unit: built overseas, loaded once for the voyage here, then sold. See what that means for condition, what new containers cost in October 2026 and when the extra money is worth spending.

Understanding new containers

What one-trip, single trip and new-build mean

Standard shipping containers are built overseas, mostly by large factories in China, and they arrive in New Zealand with a cargo inside. Once that cargo is unpacked, the empty container is sold here. Sellers call these units one-trip, single trip, one way trip or new-build: a container in its first life, with one sea voyage behind it.

That voyage leaves marks. Expect light scuffs from twistlocks and handling, a few paint scratches near the corner castings and a floor that has carried one load. Structurally the box should be as built. If a listing says new without saying one-trip, ask whether the container has been used for anything since it landed.

Check the history

New-build, near new and ex-lease are different things

Not every container sold as new has the same history. In October 2026 one Hawke’s Bay supplier listed an A grade one-trip 20ft from $5,400 excl. GST and an ex-lease new-build 20ft from $4,850 excl. GST. The second one has spent time in a hire fleet. A clearance list in Auckland sold a near new 20ft built in January 2024. These can be good buys, but they are not fresh off the ship.

The build date is stamped on the CSC safety approval plate on the cargo door. Ask for a photo of the plate and the container number before you pay, and read our guide to shipping container grades for the terms NZ sellers use.

What comes with a new container

A typical new 20ft or 40ft dry container has a factory marine paint system, a treated hardwood plywood floor (usually around 28 mm thick), rubber door gaskets, four locking bars across the cargo doors and small vents high on the side walls. Factory colours on NZ listings include beige, charcoal, green, grey, blue and black. Some sellers add a lockbox welded over the padlock so bolt cutters cannot reach it.

Roller doors, windows, shelving, power and insulation are modifications and are priced separately. See container modifications for the work NZ suppliers carry out.

Is new worth it

When a new container pays for itself

Homes, sleepouts and offices

A fit-out usually costs several times the price of the shell, so the difference between a used and a new container is a small share of the project. A new shell has a clean floor, straight walls for lining and no unknown cargo history. Read our planning notes for container tiny homes and sleepouts.

Coastal sections

Within 500 m of the coast, salt attacks every scratch in the paint. A new container starts with the full factory coating and a known history, which gives you the longest run before the first repaint. Our coastal corrosion guide explains the BRANZ exposure zones.

Visible positions

On a front section, beside a shop or in school grounds, appearance matters. A one-trip box in a colour you choose stays tidy for years with basic care, and you avoid the patched panels and old shipping line logos common on used units.

Resale later

One-trip containers hold their value. In October 2026 private sellers on Trade Me were asking $4,750 for a 2022 one-trip 20ft and $4,000 for an A grade 20ft bought in 2023. Private sellers are not usually GST registered, so those are final prices, close to the cost of new.

Andy explains what one-trip really means, which handling marks are normal on a new container and how to tell a genuine one-trip box from a repainted used one.

Buying new in New Zealand

Price, supply and delivery

Regional prices

Why new container prices differ around the country

New containers land at the big container ports. Port of Tauranga handled 40% of New Zealand’s container volume in the year to June 2025, Auckland 26% and Lyttelton 11%, according to Ministry of Transport freight figures. Rail-linked inland ports such as MetroPort Auckland, Ruakura in Hamilton and MidlandPort in Rolleston move boxes further inland. The further a yard is from that supply, the more a unit tends to cost.

In October 2026 the North Island median for a new 20ft was $4,830 incl. GST and the South Island median $4,795. The highest asking prices for one-trip 20ft units came from Hastings, Invercargill, Wanaka and Cromwell, at $5,300 to $5,850 incl. GST. Delivery is extra on almost every listing, so compare delivered prices. Our delivery guide covers truck types and site access.

What is moving new container prices

Factory prices for standard containers eased in the first half of 2026, according to the interim results of the largest manufacturer. Freight and currency pushed the landed cost the other way. Freight rates from China to New Zealand rose from April to August 2026 to an 18-month high, and the New Zealand dollar fell to about US$0.56 by October. At that rate the median new 20ft of $4,200 excl. GST equals roughly US$2,350.

Factories are building mostly 40ft high cube units, which explains why we found no published NZ price for a new standard-height 40ft. If you want a new 40ft, expect to be offered a 40ft high cube. The full data set is in the Shipping-Containers.co.nz NZ price index, October 2026, and our price guide explains how delivery and GST change the total.

Checking a new container when it arrives

Inspect the container before the driver leaves. Open both doors, check that the locking bars seat into their keepers and run a hand along the door gaskets. Walk round the outside for dents larger than handling marks, check the floor for stains or soft spots and match the container number on the doors to the number on your invoice. Mention any tight access in your quote request so the right truck is booked.

If you buy from a business for personal or household use, the Consumer Guarantees Act requires goods to be of acceptable quality and to match their description. A unit sold as one-trip that turns out to be patched or leaking does not match. Business buyers should check whether the supplier’s terms contract out of the Act.

FAQ

New shipping containers: common questions

01

A one-trip container has made a single sea voyage, carrying cargo from the factory region to New Zealand, before being sold. It is the closest thing to a brand new container you can buy here, because standard containers are built overseas. Expect minor handling marks from loading and unloading. The CSC plate on the door shows the manufacture date, so you can confirm the unit is recent.

02

In the Shipping-Containers.co.nz NZ price index, October 2026, the median asking price for a new or one-trip 20ft standard container was $4,830 incl. GST ($4,200 excl. GST), based on 51 listings. The middle half of listings sat between $4,590 and $5,290 incl. GST. Delivery is extra and is quoted per address, so add transport when you compare offers.

03

Yes, but most new 40ft units offered in New Zealand are high cubes. In October 2026 mainstream listings for a new 40ft high cube were $6,999 to $7,395 incl. GST. We found no published price for a new standard-height 40ft, which matches reports that factories are concentrating production on 40ft high cubes. Ask suppliers directly if you need the lower height.

04

For farm gear, tools or building materials, a used wind and watertight container usually does the job for about $1,150 less, comparing median 20ft prices incl. GST in October 2026. New makes more sense when appearance matters, when the site is near the coast, when goods must stay clean and dry, or when you plan to convert the container later.

05

A new one-trip container should be wind and watertight on delivery, with intact door gaskets and no holes. Watertight does not mean dry inside. Steel cools overnight and moisture in the air condenses on the roof, which is common in humid parts of New Zealand. Vents, moisture absorbers and pallets that keep goods off the floor still matter.

06

Usually you choose from the colours a supplier has in stock. NZ listings in October 2026 offered beige, charcoal, green, grey, blue and black units. A custom repaint is possible but is priced as extra work. If colour matters to you, put it in your quote request so suppliers can say what is available near your delivery address.
