Shipping Containers for Events, Bars, Cafes and Pop-Up Shops

A modified container opens up as a bar or kiosk at a festival and locks up as a steel box overnight. Between events it stores the gear. This page covers which container types suit hospitality, what the conversions cost in NZ, refrigerated units and the rules to check.

Bars and kiosks

A serving front that locks shut

Most container bars have a serving hatch cut into the side wall with a lift-up awning, or use a side-opening container where the whole side folds open. A 20ft side-opening unit had a median asking price of $11,122 incl. GST in October 2026. A cut hatch on a standard box costs less but gives a smaller serving front.

Cafes and food

Permanent cafes and takeaway counters

In Hastings, a well known ice creamery now trades from two modified 20ft containers. Food outlets need a proper fit-out: wall and ceiling linings that can be cleaned, a sink, power for appliances and ventilation. The work list is the same as for any container modification, with food safety rules on top.

Pop-up retail

Pop-up shops and market stalls

A 20ft with a roller door or a glazed side door makes a lockable shop for markets, launches or seasonal trade. It can be moved to the next location on a truck, stock and fittings included if the transport operator agrees to lift it loaded.

Refrigerated containers for events

A refrigerated container keeps drinks, food and ice cold behind the bar or in the catering area. In October 2026, published prices for operating used 20ft reefers were $5,520 and $10,195 incl. GST. Non-operating reefers sell for less, from $3,680 incl. GST, but they are only insulated boxes without a working cooling unit. Freight market reports in August 2026 described refrigerated container availability as tight, so book early for summer events.

Plan the power before anything else. 40ft reefers commonly need three-phase supply, and the connection must be done by a licensed electrician. At a field or park venue that usually means a generator sized for the unit. Most event operators hire a reefer for the event period rather than buy one; our container hire page explains how hire terms work. Food stored for sale has to meet food safety requirements, and MPI explains the rules for cold and dry stores.

Andy explains how reefer containers work, what the unit needs in power and why a used reefer can serve as a cool room.

Event logistics

Event storage, delivery and security

Storage between events

Festivals and clubs store staging, fencing, marquees and bar equipment in containers between seasons. A 40ft container takes long items such as truss and marquee poles, and racking keeps smaller gear such as lighting, signage and bar fridges findable when the next event comes around.

Delivery to the venue

Parks and showgrounds are often soft underfoot. A HIAB can place a container onto ground protection boards from the edge of the grass. Book delivery before the bump-in rush and collection after pack-down, and read our HIAB vs swinglift comparison for venue access.

On the street

A container on a road or footpath needs approval. Christchurch City Council, for example, charges $53 per m² a month for temporary use of legal road, with a $210 minimum, a traffic management plan and public liability cover. Allow lead time before the event.

Overnight security

Bars and kiosks hold stock and equipment overnight on open sites. Fit a steel lock box over the door handles with a closed shackle padlock, and close serving hatches from the inside. Lock boxes and other fittings are on our container accessories page.

Consent for a container bar, cafe or shop

A container used as a bar, cafe or shop is an occupied commercial building, not storage. Council guidance such as the Invercargill City Council container guide lists commercial use among those that need building consent. In MBIE Determination 2025/018, container and canopy structures used by a Hamilton business needed consent because people normally entered them. For a unit on site for a single event, ask the council early whether its temporary activity rules cover it. Our container consent guide explains the process, and local notes for Hawke’s Bay include examples of hospitality containers in the region.

FAQ

Event and hospitality container questions

01

It depends on the opening and fit-out. In October 2026 a 20ft side-opening container had a median asking price of $11,122 incl. GST before any bar fit-out. Adding a roller door to a new 20ft added about $3,310 at one seller. Benches, linings, power and plumbing are extra and vary with the design.

02

Usually yes for a permanent cafe. Council guidance treats commercial use as an occupied building that needs building consent, and food businesses also have to meet food safety rules. A unit on site for a single event may fall under the district plan’s temporary activity rules. Check with the council before you commit to a site.

03

Yes, reefer hire for events is common. Freight reports described reefer availability as tight in 2026, so book well ahead of summer. Ask what power the unit needs, because 40ft reefers commonly need three-phase supply. At a park or field you will usually need a generator, and a licensed electrician should handle any connection to mains power.

04

A 20ft with a roller door or a glazed side door suits most pop-up shops, because it fits on a market site and on a standard delivery truck. Use a 40ft only if you need display space and the site has room for delivery. A light interior lining and good lighting make a big difference to how the shop feels.
