How containers reach Northland
Northport
Marsden Point and the road north
Northport at Marsden Point is New Zealand’s northernmost deep-water port, owned by the Port of Tauranga, Northland Regional Council and Tupu Tonu. Its container trade has grown from 820 TEU in 2016/17 to 18,376 TEU in 2024/25, with packing and unpacking available on site. Next door, the old refinery stopped refining in March 2022 and now runs as an import terminal (Marsden Point history).
Many containers still come up State Highway 1 from Auckland yards. Distance drives the transport price: one Auckland seller published a 2024 example of $1,100 to deliver a 20ft to Kerikeri (GST not stated). Our page on container transport costs explains the other factors.
Delivery areas
Whangārei, the Mid North and the Far North
Requests go to suppliers covering Whangārei city, Kamo, Hikurangi, Marsden Point, Ruakākā, Waipū, Mangawhai, Kaiwaka and Maungatūroto in the south, Dargaville on the west coast, and Kerikeri, Kaitaia and Mangonui further north. For Wellsford and south, see our Auckland page.
Rural access can mean long gravel roads and steep driveways, and a wet paddock can stop a truck. Give the supplier photos of the access and read our guide to delivery and site preparation before booking.
Local uses
What Northlanders use containers for
Farms and lifestyle blocks
Northland holds about 5% of New Zealand’s dairy cows. Farmers and lifestyle block owners use containers as lockable sheds and feed stores; see our farm storage page.
Off-grid baches
Coastal sections from Mangawhai to the Bay of Islands use containers as lock-ups and as the start of off-grid tiny homes, which need building consent once people live in them.
Port and industry
Logistics firms and contractors around Marsden Point and Ruakākā use containers for site storage and equipment.
Orchards
Kiwifruit is also grown in Northland. Growers use containers for picking gear, and chemicals must be stored to hazardous substances rules.

Council rules and buying in Whangārei
Whangārei District Council
One of the few councils with container guidance
Whangārei District Council publishes a guidance note on relocated buildings, tiny houses and shipping containers. It says building consent is needed for using shipping containers as anything other than storage, that foundations such as concrete, piles or footings count as building work, and that service connections need approval. It also advises checking the Whangārei District Plan, for example height to boundary rules, through a PIM or planning check.
Joining containers changes the picture. In MBIE Determination 2017/067, three joined containers at a Whangārei property formed a shed that needed consent. Our building consent guide covers the exemptions.
Grades and prices
Container hire Whangārei and choosing a grade
In Northland’s humid, salty air, paint condition matters more than the grade label. Our coastal corrosion guide lists what to inspect. The Shipping-Containers.co.nz NZ price index, October 2026, puts the national median for a new 20ft at $4,830 incl. GST and a used wind and watertight 20ft at $3,680 incl. GST, before delivery. Container hire in Whangārei and storage containers for Northland jobs can be requested through the same quote form.

Not for plain storage. Whangārei District Council says building consent is needed for using a shipping container as anything other than storage, and that foundations such as concrete pads, piles or footings are building work. District plan rules, such as height to boundary, still apply, so the council suggests a PIM or planning check.
Yes, with consent. MBIE Determination 2017/067 found that three joined containers at a Whangārei property formed a shed, which is a building that needed building consent. A roof spanning between containers usually counts as building work too. Get the design checked before you buy the containers.
Delivery is quoted per address and depends on where the container starts. One Auckland seller published a 2024 example of $1,100 to Kerikeri for a 20ft, with GST not stated. Steep or muddy access adds time. A supplier with stock in Northland may be able to quote less.
Whangārei’s morning humidity averages about 83% and reaches 89% in June. Warm, moist air meets steel that cooled overnight and condenses on the roof. Fit extra vents, use moisture absorbers and keep goods on pallets. Our condensation guide has more options.
Usually, if a truck can reach the site and set down safely. Coastal sections are often steep or sandy, so send photos with your request. Sites within 500 m of the sea are in exposure Zone D, so choose sound paint. More regions are on our delivery areas page.
