Supply and delivery

Getting a container to the East Coast

Road freight

No container port and no working rail line

Gisborne’s port, run by Eastland Group as Eastland Port, is best known for loading logs for export, and it does not appear among the container ports in the Ministry of Transport FY25 port figures. The rail line south to Napier was mothballed in 2012 and has since suffered storm damage, including bridge collapses (Gisborne overview).

So containers reach Tairāwhiti by road: State Highway 2 from Napier through Wairoa, or from the Bay of Plenty through Whakatāne and Ōpōtiki. Distance is the biggest part of a Gisborne quote. A supplier with containers already in the city usually quotes less than one trucking in from Napier or Tauranga, so ask where the unit is. Our guide to container transport costs explains the other factors.

Delivery areas

City suburbs, the flats and the coast

Requests are passed to suppliers and transport operators covering Gisborne city, including Kaiti, Mangapapa, Te Hāpara, Elgin, Whataupoko and Wainui, the flats around Makaraka, Matawhero, Ormond, Manutuke and Patutahi, Te Karaka inland, and the coast north through Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay. For Wairoa and south, see our Hawke’s Bay page.

East Coast roads are long and some rural tracks are steep. Send photos of the access with your request, and read our guide to delivery and site preparation.

Delivery is quoted per address, so the more detail you give about access, the more accurate the quote.

Local uses

What Tairāwhiti buyers use containers for

Farms and stations

Agriculture and farming are core industries in the district. Containers serve as lockable sheds, feed stores and workshops on stations and lifestyle blocks; see our farm storage page.

Horticulture and vineyards

The flats around Makaraka, Matawhero and Ormond are dominated by vineyards and farms. Growers use containers for picking gear, tools and dry goods.

Forestry

Forestry is one of the district’s main industries. Contractors use containers as site stores and smoko rooms, which need consent if fitted out for people.

Cyclone recovery

After Cyclone Gabrielle, households and businesses rebuilding homes and sheds use containers as secure storage while work is done.

Council rules and buying in Gisborne

Gisborne District Council

One council, one combined plan

Gisborne District Council is a unitary authority with the powers of both a district and a regional council (Gisborne District overview). Its planning rules sit in the Tairāwhiti Resource Management Plan, which replaced seven former district and regional plans. We found no container-specific rule, so zone yards, coverage and hazard overlays apply as for other buildings.

A plain container placed on the ground for storage is generally not building work. Foundations, cut openings, power or a room fit-out bring building consent into play; MBIE lists the projects that do not need consent, and our building consent guide covers the detail.

Buying or hiring a container in Gisborne

FAQ

Shipping containers in Gisborne: common questions

01

Shipping containers for sale in Gisborne come from suppliers and yards that deliver across Gisborne city, the East Coast and Wairoa. Shipping-Containers.co.nz does not run its own depot here. We pass your request to suppliers and transport operators who service your address, and they quote you directly with the container price and delivery. A 20ft container for sale in Gisborne is the most common request, followed by 40ft and high cube units. Send your size and address to compare quotes.

02

Usually, for storage. A container placed on the ground without foundations is generally not building work, so building consent is not normally needed. The Tairāwhiti Resource Management Plan still applies, including yards, coverage and hazard overlays. Ask Gisborne District Council about your property before placing a container long term.

03

Gisborne has no container shipping service in the national port figures and its rail line has been mothballed since 2012, so containers come by road from Napier or the Bay of Plenty. Distance adds truck time. A supplier with containers already in Gisborne can usually quote a lower delivered price.

04

Yes, to most places a truck can reach. Requests for Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay, Ruatoria and inland stations are passed to suppliers who service them. Coast roads can close after heavy rain, as SH35 did after Cyclone Gabrielle, so allow flexibility in the delivery date.

05

A container gives you lockable, weatherproof storage that can be moved once the rebuild is finished, and hire avoids reselling it afterwards. Place it on the highest firm ground on the property, keep goods off the floor and check the council’s hazard information for your address.

06

A 20ft holds tools, feed and spare parts and is easier to place on rural sites. A 40ft suits machinery but needs more room for the truck. Our guide to choosing a container size compares the options, and other regions are on our delivery areas page.
