Port and inland port
Port Otago and the Southern Link hub
Port Otago‘s container terminal at Port Chalmers covers 17.7 ha, can store more than 6,400 containers and has 1,450 reefer points. It is one of New Zealand’s two deepest container ports and the main export port for the lower South Island, and it handled 145,232 TEU in the year to 30 June 2025, about 7% of the national total.
Rail already carries 60% of the terminal’s containers, helped by a $13 million rail pad at Port Chalmers. A matching pad is planned at the Southern Link inland port on Dukes Road, Mosgiel, 32 km from the port, a joint venture of Port Otago and Dynes Group. In May 2025 the government approved an $8.2 million loan for a three-track siding into the 50 ha Southern Link Logistics Hub. With this much container traffic through Port Chalmers and Mosgiel, used and one-trip units, including refrigerated containers, can usually be sourced locally.
Local conditions
Frost, wind and harbour salt
NIWA’s Musselburgh station records about 65 ground frosts and 8 air frosts a year, around 4 snow days, about 65 days with gusts over 61 km/h and 738 mm of rain. Cold nights are the main cause of condensation inside a steel container, so ventilation and moisture absorbers matter more here than in the north. The condensation guide explains what works.
Much of Dunedin lies within 500 m of the coast or the harbour, which puts it in NZS 3604 exposure zone D. In that band, paint breaks down faster at scratches, dents and door seals. Touch up damage early, keep the roof free of ponding water and follow our coastal corrosion guide. Dunedin is in H1 climate zone 5, which sets the insulation targets for any container fitted out as a room.
Local uses
What Dunedin and Otago use containers for
Hill suburb storage
Many Dunedin sections are steep with little garage space. A 10ft or 20ft container on a level pad near the street gives lockable storage without building a shed. Check the access first: a HIAB can lift over a fence or bank, but it needs firm ground for its outriggers.
Flat moves and renovations
The University of Otago had 21,295 students in 2025, and many flats change tenants each summer. Short-term container hire suits landlords renovating between tenancies and households storing furniture for a few months. Ask suppliers for their minimum hire period when you request a quote.
Cribs and coastal sections
An Otago crib often needs secure storage for a boat and fishing gear between visits. A plain storage container needs no building consent, but a conversion for sleeping does. Our sleepout guide explains what changes once people sleep in it.
Taieri farms and Mosgiel industry
Farms on the Taieri Plain and businesses around the Southern Link hub use 20ft and 40ft containers for feed, tools and parts. A container shelter roof between two units creates a covered work area for machinery and stock feed.
Rules and delivery
Council rules and delivery around Dunedin
Dunedin City Council
The 2GP and hazard zones
Dunedin City Council’s 2nd Generation District Plan (2GP) sets the zone rules for setbacks, height and site coverage. The national building consent position applies: a container placed on the ground for storage involves no building work, while a slab, services, a roof, a fit-out or an occupied use needs consent. Our building consent guide goes through the exemptions.
The 2GP has strict natural hazard rules. New homes are prohibited in the Hazard 1A flood areas of the Taieri spillways, and within the coastal hazard overlay covering South Dunedin and Aramoana new homes must be relocatable. South Dunedin flooded in June 2015. A container-based building can be designed to be moved, but it is still a dwelling that needs building consent, so talk to the council before buying for a hazard-zoned site.
Delivery areas
Hill suburbs, Mosgiel and Clutha
Suppliers who service Dunedin deliver across the city and to Mosgiel, the Taieri, Green Island, Brighton, Port Chalmers, Aramoana and Waikouaiti, and south to Berwick and Balclutha. Flat sites in South Dunedin, Mosgiel and the Taieri usually suit a swinglift. Steep hill suburbs with narrow streets and tight driveways normally need a HIAB, and on the tightest sites a 10ft unit may be the practical limit. Our delivery guide lists the access measurements suppliers ask for.
Container hire in Dunedin and purchases are both quoted per address, so send the details through our quote form. An operating 20ft reefer sold locally for $5,520 incl. Shipping containers in Dunedin: common questions
Shipping containers for sale in Dunedin come from suppliers and yards that deliver across Dunedin, Mosgiel, Oamaru and the rest of coastal Otago. Shipping-Containers.co.nz does not run its own depot here. We pass your request to suppliers and transport operators who service your address, and they quote you directly with the container price and delivery. A 20ft container for sale in Dunedin is the most common request, followed by 40ft and high cube units. Send your size and address to compare quotes.
Not for plain storage. Placing a container on the ground or on sleepers is not building work, so building consent is generally not needed. A slab with fixings, services, a roof, a fit-out or use as a sleepout or office does need consent. The 2GP still sets setback and coverage rules, and its hazard overlays limit new homes, so check with the council first.
In the Shipping-Containers.co.nz NZ price index, October 2026, one-trip 20ft containers were listed in Dunedin at $4,700 and $4,795 incl. GST, close to the South Island median of $4,795 incl. GST. A used 20ft sold locally for $3,680 incl. GST and a new 20ft high cube was listed at $5,395 incl. GST. Delivery is extra and depends on distance and access, so ask for a delivered price.
Yes. Suppliers who service Dunedin take short-term requests, mostly for 10ft and 20ft units. Published NZ hire rates for a 20ft container run from $90 to $276 per month (GST excluded or not stated), and published minimum terms range from two to 12 months. Delivery and collection are charged separately. See our shipping container hire page for what to ask before you sign.
Usually, with the right truck. A HIAB crane truck can lift a container over a bank or fence and set it on a level pad, which suits most hill suburbs. A swinglift needs a long, level strip beside the truck and rarely works on steep streets. Send photos and measurements of the street, driveway width, overhead lines and the placement spot, and the supplier will confirm the method before quoting.
Storage containers in Dunedin face cold nights and harbour humidity. Fit extra vents at both ends, use moisture absorbers, keep goods on pallets and never load anything wet. Set the container with a slight fall so the roof sheds water. For furniture or paper stored for months, an insulated or lined container reduces the problem further.
Yes, for storage. A container placed on the ground at a crib for boats, bikes or tools needs no building consent, although the district plan still applies. Turning it into a bunk room or sleepout is building work and needs consent unless an exemption fits. For Central Otago cribs, see our Queenstown and Central Otago page.
