Supply and delivery

How containers reach Auckland sections

Port and inland ports

Port of Auckland, Wiri and MetroPort

The Port of Auckland, owned by Auckland Council, handled 583,826 TEU in the year to June 2025, about 26% of New Zealand’s container trade (Ministry of Transport port figures). Its container terminal is Fergusson Wharf.

The Wiri inland port in Manukau has had a rail siding since 2010, and MetroPort at Southdown, set up in 1999, is rail-linked to the Port of Tauranga. The last leg is by road. Suppliers deliver across the North Shore, Albany, Silverdale, Henderson, Kumeū, Manukau, East Tāmaki, Papakura, Drury and Pukekohe. North of Wellsford see our Whangārei and Northland page, and south of the Bombay Hills our Hamilton and Waikato page.

Access

Tight infill sites and road placement

The region consented 15,017 dwellings in the year to October 2025, and 70% of October’s consents were multi-unit (Knowledge Auckland housing update). Infill sites leave little room for a truck. A swinglift needs a long, level, firm strip beside the truck and trailer plus about 4 to 5 metres of width for the container and stabiliser legs. A HIAB can lift over a fence but needs firm ground for its outriggers. Our comparison of HIAB and swinglift delivery explains which suits which site.

If the container has to sit on the road, footpath or berm, you need Auckland Transport approval, generally through a Corridor Access Request with a traffic management plan. Apply well before delivery day.

Islands

Waiheke and Great Barrier barge deliveries

Containers for Waiheke and Great Barrier (Aotea) cross by barge. SeaLink’s freight service runs daily freight to Waiheke and regular sailings to Great Barrier, lists shipping containers among its cargo and runs a Hiab crane truck on Waiheke on weekdays by booking. Freight is booked at least a day ahead.

Ask for one quote covering the mainland truck, the barge and the island crane. All offshore islands sit in exposure Zone D under NZS 3604, so a container at a Waiheke bach takes a lot of salt. Our guide to rust and coastal corrosion covers paint care.

Local uses

What Aucklanders use containers for

Infill building sites

Builders on townhouse sites need a lockable store for tools and materials beside the scaffold. A 20ft covers most residential jobs and is picked up once the build is closed in.

Renovation and moving storage

Households renovating or between houses keep furniture in a container on the driveway. Check the drop zone is clear of eaves, trees and power lines.

Business overflow

Retailers and trades in East Tāmaki and Wiri add storage containers in Auckland yards for seasonal stock.

Lifestyle blocks and baches

Owners around Dairy Flat, Kumeū, Pukekohe and on the islands use containers as farm sheds and boat stores. Rural zones usually have bigger setbacks.

Council rules, hire and prices

Auckland Council

The Auckland Unitary Plan and consent

Auckland Council is a unitary authority, and the planning rules for every property sit in the Auckland Unitary Plan, operative in part since 15 November 2016. We found no Auckland rule written specifically for shipping containers. A container is generally assessed like any other building against the zone’s yards, height in relation to boundary, coverage and overlays such as Special Character or Coastal.

On the Building Act side, an unmodified container placed on the ground or on sleepers for storage generally involves no building work. Foundations, openings, services or living in it bring consent into play; MBIE lists the projects that no longer need a building consent. Our guide to shipping container rules in Auckland covers zones and boundaries.

A level, well-drained pad and clear truck access matter as much as the planning check on a tight Auckland section.

Buy or hire

Container hire and storage containers in Auckland

For a build or a move of a few months, container hire avoids selling the box afterwards. For storage you need for years, compare total hire cost with buying; our guide to hiring vs buying sets out the numbers.

For price context, the Shipping-Containers.co.nz NZ price index, October 2026, puts the national median asking price for a new 20ft at $4,830 incl. GST and a used wind and watertight 20ft at $3,680 incl. GST, both before delivery. The NZ price index shows the full spread. Other regions are on our delivery areas page.

FAQ

Shipping containers in Auckland: common questions

01

Shipping containers for sale in Auckland come from suppliers and yards that deliver across North Shore, West Auckland, South Auckland, East Tāmaki, Wiri, Silverdale and Pukekohe. Shipping-Containers.co.nz does not run its own depot here. We pass your request to suppliers and transport operators who service your address, and they quote you directly with the container price and delivery. A 20ft container for sale in Auckland is the most common request, followed by 40ft and high cube units. Send your size and address to compare quotes.

02

Placing an unmodified container on the ground for storage is generally not building work, so building consent is not usually needed. The Unitary Plan still applies, and a container can breach yard, height in relation to boundary, coverage or overlay rules. Foundations, cut openings, plumbing or using it as a room bring building consent in.

03

Yes. Containers go across by barge. SeaLink lists shipping containers among its freight services, with daily freight runs to Waiheke and regular services to Great Barrier, and a crane truck on Waiheke places the container. Island sites are in coastal exposure Zone D, so check the paint condition of a used unit closely.

04

Most deliveries use a HIAB crane truck or a swinglift. A HIAB suits tight sites where the container has to be lifted over a fence or onto a pad. A swinglift suits longer, level sites and handles 20ft and 40ft units. Tell the supplier about slopes, gate widths and overhead lines.

05

Only with approval. Anything placed on an Auckland road, footpath or berm needs Auckland Transport approval, generally through a Corridor Access Request with a traffic management plan. Keeping the container inside your own boundary avoids this step, and our delivery guide covers site preparation.

06

Published on-site hire rates for a 20ft across New Zealand ranged from $90 to $276 a month in October 2026, with a median of $145 (GST excluded or not stated), plus delivery and pick-up. Send your address through the quote form for Auckland figures.
