Supply and delivery

How containers reach Hawke’s Bay sites

Napier Port

A container port with its own empty depots

Napier Port is one of New Zealand’s larger container terminals, with six mobile harbour cranes, more than 1,000 reefer points, a 10 ha empty container depot on port and a further 10 ha off-site depot at Thames Street, Pandora. It reported about 250,000 TEU in FY2025, up 9.1% on the back of the apple season and post-Gabrielle recovery (annual results).

Cyclone Gabrielle cut the rail line to the port in February 2023, and freight was trucked from temporary terminals in Hastings until rail resumed on 18 September 2023 (Scoop report). The port also has a direct rail link to the Manawatū Inland Port at Longburn, covered on our Palmerston North page.

Reefers weigh more than dry containers, so describe access and ground conditions when you ask for a delivery price.

Delivery areas

Napier, Hastings and the wider bay

Requests go to suppliers and transport operators covering Napier, Taradale, Meeanee, Awatoto, Hastings, Havelock North, Flaxmere, Clive and Twyford, plus Waipawa, Waipukurau, Dannevirke and Wairoa. For Tairāwhiti see our Gisborne page.

Orchard and vineyard deliveries often go down rows and races with soft ground in winter. Give the supplier the gate width and a photo of the set-down spot. Our guide to delivery and site preparation lists what to check.

Local uses

How Hawke’s Bay uses containers

Orchards

Gabrielle destroyed 610 ha of apple orchards; 459 ha had been replanted by February 2025. Growers use containers for bins, picking gear and tools while sheds are rebuilt.

Vineyards

Wineries and vineyards use containers as on-site offices and storage for equipment and dry goods.

Cool storage

With a reefer-heavy export trade, growers add refrigerated containers at harvest. A 40ft reefer usually needs three-phase power.

Recovery and retail

After Gabrielle, marae and golf clubs used containers to store food, stock feed and supplies, and Rush Munro’s in Hastings now trades from two modified 20ft containers.

Councils, consent and prices

Two councils

Napier City and Hastings District rules

Napier City Council adopted the decisions version of its Proposed District Plan in October 2025; it takes full effect once appeals are resolved (1News report). Hastings uses the Hastings District Plan. Neither council publishes container guidance that we found, so zone and hazard overlay rules apply as for any building.

A plain container on sleepers for storage is generally not building work. A roof between containers, a slab with hold-down fixings or a fit-out for people needs consent; see our building consent guide.

A level, well-drained pad and clear truck access matter as much as the planning check on a tight Auckland section.

Buy or hire

Container hire Hawkes Bay and buying prices

The Shipping-Containers.co.nz NZ price index, October 2026, puts the national median for a new 20ft at $4,830 incl. GST, though Hastings listings were among the highest asking prices for new 20ft units. A used wind and watertight 20ft had a national median of $3,680 incl. GST, before delivery. See the NZ price index for detail, and use our farm storage guide for layouts. Storage containers in Napier for short jobs can be hired through the quote form.

FAQ

Shipping containers in Hawke’s Bay: common questions

01

Shipping containers for sale in Hawke’s Bay come from suppliers and yards that deliver across Napier, Hastings, Havelock North and Central Hawke’s Bay. Shipping-Containers.co.nz does not run its own depot here. We pass your request to suppliers and transport operators who service your address, and they quote you directly with the container price and delivery. A 20ft container for sale in Hawke’s Bay is the most common request, followed by 40ft and high cube units. Send your size and address to compare quotes.

02

Usually, for storage. A container placed on the ground without foundations is generally not building work. The district plan still applies, including yards, coverage and hazard overlays, and some flood-hit land carries extra restrictions after Gabrielle. Ask Napier City or Hastings District Council about your address before placing anything long term.

03

A container is portable, which helps, but it can still float or be damaged in deep flooding. Place it on the highest firm ground on the property, keep valuables off the floor and check the council’s flood overlays. On Category 3 land, ask the council before placing anything.

04

Mostly from Napier Port, which runs a 10 ha empty container depot on port and a 10 ha off-site depot at Pandora, and from supplier yards in Napier and Hastings. Final delivery is by HIAB or swinglift, so the quote depends on the distance from the yard and the access at your address. Rail also links the port with Longburn near Palmerston North.

05

Yes, some suppliers hire reefers for peak season. You need a suitable power supply, often three-phase for a 40ft, connected by an electrician. Storing produce for others or for export supply chains can bring in MPI food safety requirements, so check your situation first.

06

Yes. Requests are passed to suppliers covering Waipawa, Waipukurau, Dannevirke and Wairoa as well as Napier and Hastings. Longer distances and rural roads add travel time to the delivery price, so give the full address and describe the access. Other regions are listed on our delivery areas page.
