Privacy Policy
How Shipping-Containers.co.nz collects, uses, shares and protects personal information when you request shipping container quotes, and the rights you have under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
Last updated: 13 October 2026
This policy explains how Shipping-Containers.co.nz collects, uses, shares and protects personal information. We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 2020 and its information privacy principles (IPPs).
1. Who we are
Shipping-Containers.co.nz is an independent quote marketplace for shipping containers in New Zealand. The website is operated by Containerbasis Pty Ltd (ACN 684 190 145), a company registered in Australia with its office in New Farm, Brisbane, Queensland. In this policy “we”, “us” and “our” mean Containerbasis Pty Ltd.
We do not sell or hire containers ourselves, and we do not own depots or trucks. When you send a request, we pass it to independent container suppliers and transport operators who service your area so they can quote you directly.
Because we carry on business in New Zealand, the Privacy Act 2020 applies to personal information we collect and hold through this website, even though we are based in Australia. You can contact us about privacy at hello@shipping-containers.co.nz.
2. Information we collect
We collect information you give us directly, mainly through the quote form and by email:
- your name, email address and phone number
- the delivery address or town, and notes about site access
- what you need, such as container size, type, condition, buy or hire, quantity and timing
- any message, photos or files you choose to send
- the business name, if you contact us on behalf of a business
We also collect some information automatically when you use the website:
- technical data such as IP address, browser and device type, pages visited and the referring page, recorded in server and security logs
- information from cookies, described in section 7 and in our cookie notice
You do not have to give us any information. If you leave out your contact details or the delivery location, we cannot pass your request to suppliers and you will not receive quotes. Please do not send sensitive information, such as health or banking details, that is not needed for a container quote.
3. How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- pass your request to suppliers and transport operators who service your area so they can quote you
- contact you about your request, for example to check details or ask whether you received quotes
- answer questions you send us
- run, secure and fix the website, including preventing spam and misuse of the quote form
- understand how the website is used, through aggregated statistics, so we can improve pages and the quote process
- meet our legal obligations and deal with complaints or disputes
We do not sell personal information. We do not send marketing emails unless you have agreed to receive them. If we start a newsletter or similar email service, we will ask for your consent with a separate opt-in box that is not ticked in advance, identify ourselves as the sender and include a working unsubscribe link in every message, as the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007 requires. Unsubscribe requests will be actioned within five working days.
4. Sharing with suppliers and service providers
Container suppliers and transport operators
Sharing your request with suppliers is the main purpose of the website. When you submit a request, we send your contact details, the delivery location and the details of what you need to one or more independent container suppliers or transport operators who service your area. They use it to quote you and may contact you by email or phone.
Each supplier is a separate business and a separate agency under the Privacy Act. Once a supplier receives your request, it handles your information under its own privacy practices and is responsible for that handling. To find out what a supplier holds about you, or to ask it to stop contacting you, contact the supplier directly. You can also ask us which suppliers received your request.
Service providers
We use service providers to run the website and our communications, including website hosting (SiteGround), email and form processing, spam protection and website analytics (Google Analytics and Plausible Analytics). These providers store or process information on our behalf and under our instructions, and we remain responsible for that information.
Other disclosures
We may also disclose personal information where the law requires or allows it, for example to comply with a legal obligation, to respond to a lawful request from a public agency, to prevent or lessen a serious threat to someone’s life or health, or to establish or defend a legal claim. If this website or our business is sold or restructured, information may pass to the new operator, which must use it in line with this policy.
5. Information we receive about you from others (IPP3A notice)
Since 1 May 2026, information privacy principle 3A requires an agency that collects personal information about you from someone other than you to take reasonable steps to make you aware of it. This section is our notice for those situations.
We may receive information about you indirectly when:
- someone else sends a request that names you, for example a builder who lists you as the site contact or a family member arranging storage for you
- a supplier tells us whether it was able to quote or supply you
- we check publicly available business details to confirm that a request is genuine
When this happens:
- we collect the information to deal with the container request it relates to and to keep our service working properly
- the intended recipients are the suppliers and transport operators who service the delivery area, and our service providers
- the agency collecting and holding the information is Containerbasis Pty Ltd, New Farm, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, contactable at hello@shipping-containers.co.nz
- no law requires us to collect it; it is collected only for the service described in this policy
- you have the right to ask for access to it and to ask for it to be corrected (see section 10)
If someone has given us your details and you do not want to be contacted, email us. We will stop passing on your details for that request and let the suppliers who received it know.
6. Overseas storage and disclosure
We are based in Australia, so personal information we collect is accessed and held in Australia. Our service providers may also store or process it in other countries, for example the United States in the case of Google Analytics.
When a provider only stores or processes information for us, the information is treated as held by us and is not a disclosure under IPP12. We remain accountable for it.
If we disclose personal information to a person or organisation outside New Zealand that is not acting for us, we do so only where IPP12 allows it. That includes where the recipient is subject to the Privacy Act, where it is required to protect the information in a way that overall provides comparable safeguards to those in the Privacy Act, where it is in a country or under a binding scheme prescribed by regulations, or where you have authorised the disclosure after being told expressly that the information may not be protected in the same way. The suppliers we pass requests to are businesses that service New Zealand addresses.
7. Cookies and analytics
The website uses a small number of cookies needed to run it securely, set by WordPress, our security tools and our host SiteGround. Our cookie notice describes them.
We use Plausible Analytics, which works without cookies and does not store IP addresses, and Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the website, such as which pages are viewed, how long visits last, the type of device and browser, and an approximate location derived from the IP address. Google Analytics uses cookies and sends this information to Google, which processes it in the United States and other countries. We use the reports in aggregated form and do not use them to identify individual visitors.
You can opt out of Google Analytics with Google’s opt-out browser add-on, block or delete cookies in your browser settings, or use a private browsing mode. Blocking essential cookies may stop parts of the website, such as the quote form, from working.
New Zealand law does not require a cookie consent banner. The Privacy Act still applies to personal information collected through cookies, so we explain here what we use and how you can control it. If we add advertising or remarketing cookies in future, we will update this policy and the cookie notice before they are used.
8. Security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information against loss and against unauthorised access, use, modification or disclosure, as IPP5 requires. These steps include encrypted connections (HTTPS), limiting access to the people who need it, using established hosting and email providers, keeping software up to date and filtering spam. No website or email system is completely secure, so please do not send us information you would not want disclosed.
If a privacy breach has caused or is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and the people affected, as the Privacy Act requires.
9. How long we keep information
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy (IPP9). Quote requests and related emails are generally kept for up to 24 months after our last contact with you, so we can answer follow-up questions and deal with any complaint, and are then deleted or anonymised. We keep information for longer where the law requires it or where it is needed for a dispute. Suppliers keep the information we send them under their own retention practices.
10. Access and correction
You have the right to ask for access to the personal information we hold about you (IPP6) and to ask us to correct it (IPP7). Email hello@shipping-containers.co.nz with your request. We may need to confirm your identity before we act on it. We will respond as soon as reasonably practicable and no later than 20 working days after we receive the request, as the Privacy Act requires. We do not charge for access or correction requests.
If we decide not to correct information as you asked, you can ask us to attach a statement of the correction you sought, and we will do so.
You can also ask us to delete your request details. We will do so unless we need to keep them for a legal reason.
11. Complaints
If you are concerned about how we have handled your personal information, please contact us first so we can try to put it right. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, which deals with complaints under the Privacy Act 2020.
12. Children
The website is for people arranging to buy or hire shipping containers and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we will delete it.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when our service, our providers or the law change. The date at the top shows the current version. If we make a significant change to how we use or share personal information, we will say so on the website.
